Forestry represents an important emerging Yukon industry sector. The Government of Yukon is currently developing new legislation that will provide for long term tenure opportunities and that will ensure that forest planning, compliance and enforcement provisions are in place.  These provisions will provide increased certainty for industry and other key stakeholders and will help ensure that our forest resources are managed in a way that returns the most benefits possible to Yukoners. Once this new legislation is in place, it is expected that there will be improved investment opportunities in the Yukon forestry sector.

Our Rich Lumber Resources

Over 281,000 square kilometres of boreal forests cover 57% of Yukon. White spruce and lodgepole pine are the territory’s primary merchantable tree species. In select productive land base regions, throughout Yukon, there is an abundant supply of mature trees.

Our Tax Environment & Incentives

Yukon offers a very competitive tax regime with no capital or territorial sales tax, competitive corporate taxes, and numerous investment tax incentives.

Opportunities for Value-added Products

Examples of value-added industries currently operating in Yukon include:

  • Pre-fabricated log homes – both milled and scribe log homes
  • Post and beams for mining and construction industries
  • Roof trusses
  • Lumber
  • Niche products such as cabinets, moldings and log furniture
  • Timber

Mobility & Access

There is direct access to the Yukon by sea through the nearby port of Skagway, Alaska, which is closer to Asia than Vancouver is.  This ice-free port, 160 kilometres south of Whitehorse, is a commercial shipping outlet for goods destined for Asia and the west coast of North America.

Experts in Northern Construction

Yukon's construction industry has a long history of working for natural resource companies. Our companies have completed many projects in the Canadian north involving difficult terrain, including areas with permafrost, mountains and thick forests. The development of new standards for foundations, walls and ventilation systems has Yukon companies leading the way in northern contruction expertise.
