There is direct access to the Yukon by sea through the nearby port of Skagway, Alaska, which is closer to Asia than Vancouver is. This ice-free port, 160 kilometres south of Whitehorse, is a commercial shipping outlet for goods destined for Asia and the west coast of North America.
